On January 1st, the Philippines officially assumed the chairship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for 2026. Some anticipate the Philippines will make bold decisions, especially in maritime security, guided by its own national interests (Chakravati, 2026). This article aims to elaborate on the domestic circumstances and great-power influences of the Philippines’ chairmanship, particularly in navigating the prolonged regional disputes.
