STEAR Board: Open Positions

President

We are looking for a President to chair STEAR's board. The Presidents are responsible for taking the overall day-to-day leadership and management of the STEAR team, including chairing board meetings every two weeks and representing the organisation to partners, funders and at our major flagship events. The Presidents chair a board including all the Heads of Portfolio, and work closely with all internal staff and external partners of STEAR.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Chair the STEAR Board, leading bi-weekly board meetings and taking ultimate responsibility for the conduct and progress of the 8 portfolios within the organisation

  • Act as the Interface between STEAR and its Trustees and Advisory Board, producing quarterly progress reports and holding progress meetings.

  • Lead on setting the organisation’s strategic direction, working with each board member to set a strategy for their portfolio.

Qualifications

Mandatory

  • Age 18 - 30 (Student, Recent Graduate or Young Professional)

  • Good knowledge of or proven interest in Europe, the EU and/ or Asia as well as international relations/ foreign affairs

  • Possess strong understanding of STEAR’s mission, vision and activities

  • Extensive leadership experience (preferably in an international context)

  • Excellent verbal communication and writing skills in English

  • Extensive network of various stakeholders in civil society, public, and private sectors

  • Willingness to engage with STEAR after the term, i.e. join to the Board of Trustee (3-5 hours/month)

Vice President for Strategy and Growth

We are looking for one Vice President of Strategy and Growth (VPSG) to strengthen and continue to grow STEAR's brand and output. This Board Member will take the lead on the founding and growth of STEAR's in-person chapters, as well as tracking and managing the KPIs and overall performance of STEAR. Through gathering internal feedback and delivering external pulse surveys, the VPSG will also work closely with both internal and external stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Promote STEAR’s long-term strategy and growth by overseeing the Singapore Chapter of the organisation, as well as leading on the establishment of at least two chapters over the course of the term

  • Track and manage the KPI and Key Performance Objectives of STEAR, making sure that portfolios are achieving the required levels of performance

  • Organise the Mid-Term Internal Survey and Impact Report, as well as External Pulse Surveys to establish the key issues at stake in Europe-Asia Relations

Qualifications

Vice President for External Affairs

We are looking for a Vice President for External Affairs (VPEA) who is creative, dedicated, and full of initiative to become part of STEAR’s executive board and shape the direction of a growing think tank. The VPEA is broadly responsible for the externally facing activities at STEAR, including external events, partnerships and cultural events. The VPEA takes the lead on various parts of programming, including our regular Guest Speaker Series, the STEAR Dialogue series and our flagship cultural event, the Global Village. Furthermore, the VPEA will participate in general strategy, oversight and management of STEAR as part of the executive team. The VPEA manages a team of external officers and is assisted by three managers situated beneath them within STEAR’s hierarchy – each being responsible for events, partnerships and culture. 

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Raise the profile of STEAR across Asia and Europe through partnerships, events and public outreach 

  • Lead a team of events officers, partnership officers, and cultural officers to execute STEAR’s external events (e.g., Guest Speaker Series, STEAR Dialogue Series), cultural events (e.g., STEAR's flagship Global Village 2023) and ad-hoc based projects

  • Create and manage long-term and value-based partnerships with leading youth organisations and multilateral institutions

  • Oversee and manage STEAR’s general strategy as part of the executive team

Vice President for Internal Affairs

We are looking for a Vice President for Internal (Affairs) to join STEAR’s executive board. The VPIA will be responsible for the internal activities at STEAR (e.g., capacity building activities, social events, virtual team buildings, internal cultural activities). Leading three (3) sub-teams consisting of 9-10 members, the VPIA will have direct oversight of STEAR’ s Human Resources, Training and Mentorship Team and the Secretariat. Furthemore, the VPIA will participate in the general strategy and management of STEAR as part of the executive team by closely collaborating with the Co-Presidents, the two other Vice Presidents, as well as the rest of the Board Members.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead a team of 9-10 members (i.e., Training and Mentorship Officers, HR Officers, Deputy Secretary)

  • Oversee  the training and capacity building activities within STEAR, including the Peer Coaching Programme

  • Oversee the HR activities of STEAR, including recruitment, social events, (virtual) team buildings, internal cultural projects

  • Oversee the Secretariat activities of STEAR, including internal communication channels and knowledge management

  • Manage STEAR’s Alumni Network

  • Oversee and manage STEAR’s general strategy as part of the executive team

Editor-In-Chief

We are looking for two Editors-in-Chief that can lead the Editorial Office and communicate with the rest of the STEAR board. Editors-in-Chief manage a large, independent portfolio of writers and editors that regularly produce online content published on our website. They also manage various editorial projects, most notably our yearly Journal of Asia and Europe Relations publication in the fall. 

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Work closely with the team of writers and editors to develop editorial boards for publications and policy blogs

  • Liaise with external and new partners for potential collaborations

  • Hire and train writers and editors

  • Communicate and collaborate actively with Presidents and other portfolios to ensure an efficient workflow 

Qualifications

Communications Director

We are looking for two Communications Directors (CD) to become part of STEAR’s board. The CDs are responsible for the establishment and monitoring of a multi-channel communications strategy, management of social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter) as well as the website. Additionally, they take charge of the outreach strategies and operations of the whole organisation, as well as designs, brand identity, layout of all events, publications and media coverage. The CDs manage a small team of Creative Assistants and closely collaborate with STEAR’s board and team members. 

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage social media on 4 channels: create and adjust social media strategy, create engaging and distinct content specific to the channel, schedule content (LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook)

  • Ensure adherence to brand guidelines across the organisation at all times and take charge of designs, brand identity and layout of all events and publications

  • Maintain and update our website, answer enquiries coming in through the contact form

  • Create a lively community, interact with followers, other organisations, etc.

  • Regularly attend Board Meetings

  • Write a monthly newsletter

  • Set and track KPIs across all outlets

  • Manage a team of multiple people

Qualifications

Conference Director

We are looking for two Conference Directors (CD) to be a part of STEAR’s board. The CDs are responsible for coordinating all logistics of the Annual Conference and other events, including but not limited to: event schedule, speaker arrangement, participant selection and communication, and publicity. The CDs manage a team of Conference Assistants and closely collaborate with STEAR’s Board and Team Members.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate the Annual Conference and other events, overseeing the planning and operations, including but not limited to: event schedule, speaker arrangement, participant selection and communication, and publicity

  • Supervise and delegate Assistant Conference Officers in their duties

  • Coordinate meeting logistics for bi-weekly team meetings

  • Communicate and collaborate actively with Presidents and other portfolios to organize the conference.

Treasurer

We are looking for two Treasurers to manage and supervise the Treasury portfolio. This position is responsible for taking key strategic and operational decisions to ensure that STEAR is financially stable. As a Treasurer, you will have the opportunity to play the key role in the continued growth of an organisation working across more than 30 countries in Europe and Asia, expanding upon the success of major projects including our annual conference, journal and cultural events.  

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage the financial administration of a think tank working across more than 30 countries

  • Coordinate fundraising opportunities, pitching to large multinational corporations, NGOs, and IGOs

  • Build strong international networks across Europe and Asia; maintain relations with existing sponsors

  • Contribute to the overall strategic direction of STEAR as one of twelve board members

  • Lead a team of five (5) Treasury Officers 

  • Represent the organisation as an ambassador at networking events
